An Illuminating Convergence of art and technology

Basking in the glow of the Secant Luminous Panel, which creates a canvas out of cabin surfaces

The Secant Luminous Panel is taking flight on STARLUX Airlines’ A350 fleet, the launch customer for the micro-LED-based lighting technology that seamlessly embeds within cabin surfaces.

Background: A 2018 Crystal Cabin Award finalist, Secant transforms the understated palette that typically dominates the walls, ceilings and monuments inside aircraft into dynamic, beautifully illuminated displays. A visual differentiator for airline brands, Secant enhances passenger accommodations and brings an elevated sense of luxury and refinement to air travel.

Why it matters: Airlines are vying to feature solutions that will elevate their passenger experiences, underscore their brand and stand out from their peers. These efforts have traditionally focused on seating and in-flight service.

  • Secant creates a canvas out of typically underutilized cabin surfaces to provide bespoke experiences that accommodate passenger comfort and stimulate visual interest.

Case in point: STARLUX integrated Secant with a customized art design on three bulkhead monuments. The typically plain bulkhead walls now shine, elegantly animating the artwork while enhancing STARLUX’s A350 cabin theme and providing a more welcoming atmosphere to passengers when boarding.

Secant’s discriminator is the flexibility and scalability engineered into the micro-LED panels, allowing for complete structure integration, user control and customization.

  • Secant functions like illuminated wallpaper, not a solution that’s bolted on or mounted like a TV. It flawlessly adapts the shape and form of the surface material it’s applied to. The result is a glare-free display fully distributed throughout the application.

  • Complete control is given to airlines, who decide what to display and can create unique designs to fit their brands.

  • The inherent modularity that enables Secant’s easy application to entire ceilings or walls, also allows for smaller applications throughout the cabin, perhaps as an accent piece or a passenger information placard on a premium suite.

The STARLUX iteration is a single implementation among seemingly infinite possibilities.

  • Alternate applications could include video content of scenery or even skyscapes implemented on the ceiling to expand the passenger perception beyond the physical constraints of the cabin.

  • Seasonal imagery or scenes reflecting the destination can immerse travelers in unique experiences.

Airlines could further use Secant to reinforce their unique brand messaging, display passenger seat information and egress patterns or provide ancillary revenue through advertising.

The bigger picture: Integrating Secant into existing main cabin lighting infrastructure amplifies its capabilities.

For instance: Synching Secant with Collins’ Hypergamut™ full-cabin wash lighting system further enhances passenger comfort. Hypergamut wavelengths harmonize with the body’s circadian rhythms, allowing for natural rest and wake cycles, reducing the effects of jetlag. A sunrise or sunset displayed by Secant combined with Hypergamut’s natural light creates an immersive, relaxing and enjoyable experience for passengers.

As discerning passengers look for differentiators in how they travel, Secant challenges the status quo, arming airlines with a scalable, flexible and modular product to make leading cabin experiences even more remarkable.
